Soundtrack

For one assignment we have asked students to think of the evolution of black activism, thus far, as a movie. Given certain “scenes,” students are asked to consider: What songs would be included in the soundtrack to black activism? Here are some of ours selections what we came up with (in no particular order):

Mississippi Goddamn–Nina Simone

Beasts Of No Nation–Fela Kuti

Small Axe–Bob Marley

Say It Loud!–James Brown

Oro–Choquibtown

Ride the Fence–The Coup

Your Revolution Will Not Happen between these thighs–Sarah Jones

Bigger than Hip Hop–Dead Prez

Hurricane Song–Allen Watty

Soweto Blues–Miriam Makeba

Yes We Can–Wil.I.Am

Rouge et Bleu–Wyclef Jean
